The algae collection at the Maranhão Herbarium (MAR), comprising 1,087 specimens, represents a valuable resource for research and knowledge of the region's aquatic biodiversity. Comprising mainly specimens from marine environments, this collection contributes significantly to taxonomic, ecological and biogeographic studies, in addition to documenting the occurrence of species in coastal, estuarine and continental ecosystems of the state. In a territory with an extensive coastal zone and rich hydrography such as Maranhão, the MAR algae collection is an important source of data for environmental monitoring, conservation of aquatic habitats and development of research focused on the sustainable use of natural resources.
