The IBGE Herbarium is located in Brasília, DF, in the IBGE Ecological Reserve. It was created in 1977.
It was registered with the International Association for Plant Taxonomy (IAPT) in 1980, and was published in the Taxon Magazine, vol.29(4), page 522 of 1980, under the acronym IBGE. Today, the IBGE Herbarium has almost 88 thousand exsiccata, among which 435 nomenclatural types stand out. In addition, the collection contains a collection of fruits, wood, bryophytes and fungi (approximately one thousand specimens).
The Herbarium has an area of approximately 500 m², consisting of some support rooms, a laboratory, a greenhouse and two large rooms where the collection is stored.
It has an important collection of grasses, representative of this biome. As a rule, all botanical material collected has a duplicate sent to a herbarium with a specialist in that group of plants.
The IBGE Herbarium is currently fully computerized and digitized, with photographs available in the JABOT System database, also linked to the REFLORA project of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden Institute. More recently, it was also incorporated into the Virtual Herbarium of Flora and Fungi of Brazil - INCT, strengthening its network of links and its purpose of widely making the scientific information contained in its collection available.
