The LAPEISA collection was established in 2015 and is integrated into São Paulo State University (UNESP) triad of Teaching, Research, and extension. It brings together paleontological and zoological collections, including holotypes, rare specimens, and endangered species, in addition to a digital database with computed tomography scans and surface models. Its main purpose is to document (paleo)diversity through the registration, cataloging, curation, and protection of specimens and metadata (identification, geographical and geological origin or provenance). The paleontological collection is concentrated in the Cretaceous deposits of the Bauru Basin (northwest of São Paulo state), but it also includes materials from Bahia, Ceará, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Paraná, as well as from multiple countries (e. g., Algeria, Bolivia, Canada, China, USA, France, England, Lithuania, Madagascar, Morocco, and Myanmar). The zoological collection is mainly composed of vertebrate skulls, in addition to wet specimens, taxidermied specimens, and international rarities. The physical collection ranges from micro-remains (<5 cm) to complete skeletons of Baurusuchidae (>1.5 m; ~2,000 kg of material). The digital database exceeds 210 vertebrate species (predominantly Carnivora and Crocodyliformes), with a focus on a virtual bank of Carnivora with ~190 of the ~280 living species, Canidae with 36/37, and Felidae with 39/41. The relevance of LAPEISA is expressed through scientific production, human resource development, and dissemination.
