The collection has over 47,100 lots (estimated at more than 500,000 specimens), and is constituted by 85% of freshwater fish from South America and 15% of the marine coast of the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina.
It comprises, along with two other large collections (MZUSP and MNRJ) the most comprehensive set of large-scale faunal surveys currently available for Brazilian freshwater fishes (Nogueira et al., 2010).
The collection has a large number of lots from the Uruguay River basin, coastal rivers of the Rio Grande do Sul, Patos Lagoon and Tramandaí River systems, with representatives of all know species of the state. There is also material collected from most Brazilian coastal rivers, and the São Francisco and Paraná River basins. Lots from the Amazon basin refer mainly to the Amazon, Tocantins, Tapajós, Xingu, Purus and Madeira systems, in Brazil, and Ucayali River basin in Peru. The collection also has representatives from northeastern Brazil, which includes 46 species. This collection from the northeast is important as a reference for future work, because the region has its rivers heavily impacted by plantations of sugar cane, dams and introductions of exotic species.
The collection has an important material testimony from some regions of the state, presently transformed in lakes of hydroelectric plants.
The collection includes 14,110 type specimens, of which 231 are holotypes.
