VIC Herbarium was founded in 1930, by Ynes Mexia. It is part of the Department of Plant Biology, Federal University of Viçosa. It is a regional herbarium with 54.000 specimens and 42 type-specimens, is the third collection of the Minas Gerais State. Renowned botanists deposited part of their collections in the VIC as: Agnes Chase, Howard S. Irwin and JG Kuhlmann. The collection consists of algae, fungi and plants, especially angiosperms from several ecosystems of the Minas Gerais State: caatinga, campos rupestres, cerrado and semi-deciduous rain forests included in the area of Atlantic Forest, as well as in other regions of Brazil.
