The Ornithology Collection of UFMT comprises the largest and most complete bird collection in Midwest Brazil, having started in 1983, then with a regional scope. Presently it continues to be a reference for regional biodiversity, with ample representation of the avifauna of Mato Grosso, however it also has collections from neighboring states and even from other regions of Brazil, with more than 700 species represented. It currently has 5600+ accessioned specimens, the vast majority being study skins, in addition to more than 3000 tissue samples associated with the specimens.
