The Herbarium PEUFR of the Biology Department of the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco, it began in 1916, founded by Dom Bento Pickel who organized a botanical collection of 3,500 specimens. On the initiative of Professor Vasconcelos Sobrinho was officially created in 1961, the Herbarium Professor Vasconcelos Sobrinho (ESA), from materials collected by Vasconcelos himself, Dárdano de Andrade Lima and collaborators, and received duplicates of other institutions. In 1979 was registered in the Index Herbariorum under the current acronym PEUFR. Currently has about 53,000 specimens, including Typus distributed among Phanerogams and Cryptogams, of which about 31,500 have been computerized. The herbarium contains the following important collections: The Herbarium SUDENE - HSDB, Collection of Algae (Pernambuco and others states from the Northeast, Southeast, South and foreign countries), Pteridophyta (Pernambuco, Alagoas), Flora of Caatinga, Flora of upland forest (Pernambuco) and Atlantic forest (Pernambuco).
