The Swedish Museum of Natural History (Naturhistoriska riksmuseet, NRM), founded in 1819, is one of Europe’s leading institutions in biodiversity research and scientific collections, combining a long scholarly tradition with modern research infrastructure and strong international collaboration. Its collections comprise more than 11 million specimens assembled over more than 300 years, forming an exceptional archive of global biodiversity, with particular strength in the natural history of Scandinavia and adjacent regions. The museum also houses historically significant collections from Brazil and other parts of South America, resulting from the expeditions and scientific work of Swedish naturalists such as Anders Fredrik Regnell, Per Karl Hjalmar Dusén, Gustaf Malme and Carl Lindman, whose contributions were fundamental to the knowledge of Brazilian flora during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The holdings include algae, fungi, lichens, bryophytes, vascular plants, zoological specimens, paleontological material and geological collections. More than 4 million objects are currently registered in the museum’s collection management systems, including around 170,000 type specimens and approximately 130,000 records with photographs. The digitization of the collections is an ongoing process, with new records continuously added and updated. Research at NRM is internationally recognized, particularly in the fields of systematics, taxonomy and phylogeny, contributing to advances in our understanding of the tree of life, biodiversity and Earth history.
