The Arachnida collection of the Bahia Museum of Natural History (MHNBA) is organized into nine subcollections: Araneae, Scorpiones, Opiliones, Amblypygi, Pseudoscorpiones, Uropygi, Solifugae, Parasitiformes, and Acariformes, comprising 8,531 accessioned records (4,518 spiders, 3,685 scorpions, and 328 specimens from the remaining orders/suborders) cataloged through April 2026. The collection houses six type species, as well as three species of conservation concern. Its earliest record dates to a collection made in August 1980 of a Ctenidae spider specimen (Nothroctenus UFBA-ARA 321) from the area influenced by the Pedra do Cavalo Hydroelectric Dam, between Governador Mangabeira and Cachoeira, Bahia. Since then, the collection has grown steadily from its spider and scorpion holdings, which were the first to be organized during the 1980s following the establishment of the Venomous Animals Laboratory (LAP), now the Center for Ophiology and Venomous Animals (NOAP), at the Federal University of Bahia. Consequently, Araneae and Scorpiones have consistently remained the most representative orders in terms of both specimens and accessioned records since the 1980s. The deposited specimens originate from field collections conducted by teams involved in scientific research projects and/or from donations made by local communities. The collection stands out as a university-based regional reference collection, the only arachnological collection from Northeastern Brazil currently represented on digital biodiversity platforms, with particularly strong coverage of the State of Bahia.
