The Scientific Collection of Arachnids of the Museum of Natural History of the Federal University of Bahia (MHNBA) had its first record in October 1982, from the collection of a specimen of scorpion (Bothriurus asper), at Raso da Catarina Ecological Station, Jeremoabo, Bahia. Since then, the collection
has had a significant increase in the number of listed animals, currently having more than 7000 specimens (4261 spiders and 3436 scorpions and 216 from smaller groups). Among the spiders, 54 families, 120 genera and 110 species were registered; among scorpions, 3 families, 11 genera and 87 species. The specimens deposited came from captures carried out by teams involved in scientific research projects and/or donated by the local community. Their respective data are contained in the collection's registration book, fully computerized in Excel spreadsheets. Although it is formed mostly by specimens from the State itself, the collection also has animals from other locations in Brazil, most from the Northeast Region. In the case of other countries, there are specimens of scorpions belonging to 4 different species in Uruguay. In addition, the paratypes used in the description of Tityus aba, and Phoneutria bahiensis, both endemic to Bahia, are also part of the collection.
